Memorandum relating to the effects of deceased
The Captain, or in the case of mail steamers, the purser attends before the Registrar, and makes an affidavit of the death of the passenger, and of the property he left. This as a rule consists only of a small basket of clothing, in most instances this clothing is worth only a few dollars, and not worth the trouble or the expense of administration. If the relatives do not come for it, the Captain comes to the Registry
